Alex Ovechkin won’t be heading to Nashville.
Following Washington’s 4-3 overtime loss to the Philadelphia Flyers, the Capitals announced Ovechkin will not attend the all-star festivities this weekend.
According to the team, Ovechkin, who has 28 goals and 14 assists in 46 games this season, is nursing a lower body injury “that would be better served by rest”.
“We made this difficult decision after taking into consideration what we felt was best for Alex and our organization,” said Capitals GM Brian MacLellan in a statement. “Alex has been an incredible ambassador for our team and the league, but we believe it is better if he uses this time to heal and ideally be completely healthy for the duration of the season.”
The team says Ovechkin is considered to be “day-to-day”.
As a result of missing the all-star game, Ovechkin will be forced to miss Washington’s Feb. 2 game against the Florida Panthers.
