Kevin Hayes picked up an unusual penalty on Monday night.

The New York Rangers forward was assessed a 10 minute misconduct for flipping a broken stick over the glass just outside the New Jersey Devils zone early in the first period.

Have a look:

Former Toronto Maple Leafs captain Mats Sundin was suspended one game during the 2003-04 season for throwing a broken stick over the glass and into the stands.

Sundin was not penalized during the game.

"Regardless of whether Mr. Sundin may have been overcome by the frustration or emotion of the moment, there is no way the league can tolerate his reaction," said Colin Campbell, the NHL's director of hockey operations, per the Associated Press.

One has to believe the league will look at the Hayes incident for further discipline.

The 22-year-old, who is in his second season with the Rangers, has not been suspended previously.
